Project 2

Investigate Kilbury Drive, Worcester as a potentialgrowth point for locations for housing and community uses.

In groups consider the following:
The regional government is proposing a target of 24,500 new homes to be built in South Worcestershire between 2006 and 2026 (20 years).

1. Where should these be located? Kilbury Drive has been put forward as a potential growth point. Think of the definition of sustainable development (see RTPI report chapter 1).

2. If these homes are to be sustainable development:
What issues do we need to take account of when deciding where they should be built? (see The South Worcestershire Joint Core Strategy Preferred Options Paper, Location of Development and Sustainable Development Principles, p13.)

3. What type of homes are needed: who are the homes for?

4. What will need to be provided with the homes?- e.g jobs, public transport, schools, open space, shops, health centres etc.

5. What type of energy would these homes use?

6. Where would the building materials come from?

7. What skills are needed to build the homes?

8. Where would the labour come from?
